Nell Rumble Shield 11th August 2024

After a long hot day, Martin, Barry and Graham triumphed in the 2 Wood Triples (Nell Rumble Shield). This one day competition was played on a “round robin” basis with 2 teams in contention on the last game, unfortunately for Jack, Stuart and Pam, Martin’s team managed to secure a draw on the last game to pip the win.

FOOTNOTE

Nell Rumble nee Evans
Nellie Coulsdon Evans was born in Liverpool, the eldest of nine children. She met and married Albert Rumble during the war, working for her father-in-law in the family’s business – she mentioned that he was very good about letting her have time off to play in County Competitions. Nell and Albert had three children, Sylvia, Dennis, and Leslie.

In 1953, aged 38, Nell joined our club. She had been walking by, when she was invited in, and was told she had natural ability. Soon she had become a ‘County Player’ earning her County badge, and playing in quite a few games for the County. She won some County Honours and this information can be found on the Honours boards at the Club.

Amongst her other achievements was becoming President of the North Hants Women’s Bowling Association in 1977.

Nell won our club’s ladies’ championship three times, in 1975, 1977, and 1988. She also became the first person to win the Toucher, the Simpkin and Ladies Champ trophies in the same year, 1977.

Nell was also ladies’ President at our club six times, in 1964, 1965, 1975, 1976, 1984, and 1985.

Nell was ladies’ Captain twice, in 1970 and in 1993. She was ladies Secretary for 7 years, 1977-1983 inclusive.

1993 marked Nell’s 40th anniversary with the club, and not only did she work very hard as Ladies’ Captain that year, even playing 14 games in 10 days when we were in difficulties with numbers, she also presented the Club with the trophy which bears her name.  The first Nell Rumble Trophy was played for that June, with Nell and Albert helping with the wonderful buffet we have always had on this day. Nell, during her life-time, then also generously paid for the cost of the trophies.

2 Wood Pairs Sunday 21st July

We had super weather today for our Two Wood Pairs competition.
This is played in a sets format, making it different from all of our other club competitions.

After some great bowling, including a nail-biting semi-final, it all came down to this year’s finalists to battle it out for the shield.

The runners-up were Pam Laken and Brian Brain

President’s Day 2024

Some photos, from Saturday’s President’s day. A lot of fun playing BOWLF, see notes from Sheila.
A big thanks to Graeme, Terry and Martin for organising such a great day of fun, bowls and food.

Eat your heart out Bowls England, Farnborough Bowling Club have invented a new activity to attract budding bowlers to the sport, BOWLF, a cross between bowling and golf, essentially an obstacle course, using any old equipment, planks of wood (lots of clubs have planks lurking about in their sheds), bruise mats, found a use for them at last, old wine boxes that have been using up valuable space in the bar, you name it, our TAG team (aka Terry and Graeme) and Reece the Drill can turn anything lurking in sheds/clubhouses into an obstacle course.  Even redundant bar stools, broken chairs, old buckets, old underwear, road/police cones, talk about recycling!

Costar Trophy 2nd June 2024

This year’s Drawn Triples Costar Trophy was held between 8 teams playing in two leagues. The final had a close finish and was won 7-4 by Steve Alford, Barbara Ford and Martin Lee. The worthy runners-up were Phil O’Brien, Tim Wing and Simon Webb.

A great day was had by all; perfect weather, great atmosphere, super bowling and a first class green.

A special mention of thanks for Mike Kernahan who came early and set up all the rinks and then volunteered to drop out when the final numbers were awkward. Thank you also to everyone else who supported the competition and helped make it another success for the club.

The Winners – Steve, Barbara & Martin
