About Michael

Webmaster and Bowler at Farnborough Bowling Club

Costar Trophy 2nd June 2024

This year’s Drawn Triples Costar Trophy was held between 8 teams playing in two leagues. The final had a close finish and was won 7-4 by Steve Alford, Barbara Ford and Martin Lee. The worthy runners-up were Phil O’Brien, Tim Wing and Simon Webb.

A great day was had by all; perfect weather, great atmosphere, super bowling and a first class green.

A special mention of thanks for Mike Kernahan who came early and set up all the rinks and then volunteered to drop out when the final numbers were awkward. Thank you also to everyone else who supported the competition and helped make it another success for the club.

The Winners – Steve, Barbara & Martin

Memorial Shield 5th May 2024

Memorial Shield

Yesterday was our Memorial Shield. This was the 10th year the competition has been run. It was set up by David and Laura Wansell to remember past bowlers and raise money for charity. Sadly David passed away shortly after setting this up   at far too young an age.

Over the 10 years we have raised over £2,000 for various charities. This year it was Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care.

As for the bowling; there were two sections, with Simon, Mike and Tony winning one and Wendy, David and Michael winning the other. The weather just about stayed dry for the final which was won by Wendy, David and Michael who have decided that the charity for next year’s game will be Phyllis Tuckwell again.

Winners Michael, Wendy and David

    Farnham & District Finals

The 2023 F & D Finals were held at our club with us well represented. The sun shone & the green looked great & played as it looked.

Mytchett won the Boyd shield on the Saturday defeating Tongham.

On the Sunday Sheila & Rachel fought valiantly but went down to a strong Cove team in the Ladies Pairs. Sheila made up for this by winning the mixed pairs with Michael in a game they dominated & repelled a late fightback from their Farnham opposition.

In the team games we were in 3 finals & all 3 went to virtually the last bowl before the winners were decided.

In the Mixed Triples against Mytchett we were leading for a large part of the game on one rink but losing on the other. By the last end both games were close & both rinks managed to win by 1 shot.

The Ken Britton cup looked like finding its way to Cove as they held a comfortable lead with a few ends to go but Farnborough’s never say die attitude saw us pick up a 6 on one rink & a 4 on the other to make it a nail biting finish. With a 3 shot win in one rink & a 2 shot loss on the other we won by the narrowest of margins.

The day finished with the closest of finishes in the Goolding Cup with both rinks finishing in a tie. Mytchett won the extra end on a close measure but a brave Farnborough team left the green with heads held high.
