Triples Hot Shots – Joan Moorcroft, Alec Sharman & Keith Dunstone.

badgeHaving played bowls for over 20 years I have been involved in several hot-shots, most for my side but one being scored against me. It’s not nice when you drop an eight, but great when it is for your team. All have been in rinks games until, in a F&D triples game against Odiham recently, we scored a maximum 9 shots!

It had been a close game, with just eight shots scored in the first eight ends, but to Oldham’s advantage so we were 3-5 down. Then they scored a three, so at half way we were 3-8 down, it was looking bleak.

In the tenth end the easy route to the jack became blocked by Odiham bowls, so Joan Moorcroft and I had to take the harder wide draw which we managed to do fairly successfully and were holding 3-4 shots when it was the skips to bowl. Eventually, with just one bowl to be played (ours) we were still holding 3-4 shots, maybe more, but I noticed the opposition only had one bowl in the head, but it was hard to get to, with just a small gap between various opposition bowls. I asked our skip (Keith Dunstone) if he could see the bowl in question, through the minefield. He said he could, so I told him to ‘have a go at it’ as it would mean 5-6 shots. He played the perfect controlled weight bowl, finding the tiny gap, and took it out cleanly. Having removed six bowls from the head, it became clear we had all nine shots!

The opposition were gutted, and we won the next five ends before they scored again, winning the match 23-15. Well done team, a nice result!

Farnham & District Finals

DSC00261Congratulations to all our members who took part in yesterdays Farnham & Distract finals held at our club. We were in four finals, three of which we won!

DSC00310We beat Odiham in the Ken Britten Cup. The photo of the squad Geoff Ringrose, Edna Lakeman, Harrison Ash, Mick Moorcroft, Anne Hellier and Andy Barrington is opposite.

We beat Aldershot Underwood in the F&D Mixed Triples and

Sheila and Diane beat a pair from Bourne to win the ladies pairs. Sheila also was runner up in the ladies singles.

DSC00277I am not sure but it must be one the most successful days in the club history, certainly it will go down as a day all those who took part will never forget. The amount of spectators was tremendous. I have to say it gave me great pleasure and pride watching our players represent our club so successfully.

Also, a big thanks you for those who helped on the day, some being at the club at 8am to get things ready and not leaving until 8pm. I had many visiting players say what a great job Farnborough BC had done to host the finals and the manner it was run and friendliness of our members. All in all it was a good day, one of our best. Well done all.

Alec.

F&D President’s Day

A great turnout for Alec's Farnham &District President's Day on Saturday 22nd September.

DSC00214The weather was perfect, the bowls was fun, the cream tea was superb and to cap it all a Geoff's rink won the Presidents Shield. we have had very positive feedback from our visitors, all saying what a lovely day it was and how hard our club members worked to make it such a pleasant experience.

Well done all those who helped, we sure know how to host a game. Ohh, and we raised £300 for Cancer Research and Phyllis Tuckwell to boot. Top stuff. Alec

Win for both Men’s Team in A&D League

Both teams won 4-1 at home last night the A team by 56 shots to 41.  This should keep them at the top of Division 1.
A good result for the ‘B’ team, Our third win, the first one by 4-1. Colin’s rink started slow and were 1-6 down but won 28-10! My own rink started well being 21-3 up at one point but despite a Fleet Utd come back we still won by 12 points. Jack’s team had been ahead 17-11 but became stuck on that score for the last seven ends. But a team win by 20 points was a great result. Home to Farnborough Gate next week

A&D league games 26th

Mixed results last night
The ‘B’ team had a tough game. Fleet Social are a very strong team in Div 3, despite losing their last two games. Their team captain told me the two losses could easily have been two wins for them but both were lost on the last end; so they were determined to put that right and did so against us last night. Two of our rinks did recover quite well towards the end of the game but not enough to earn us any points. We must just put that game behind us and make sure we get back to our winning ways next week. As usual, a few changes will be made in the team selection as some experienced players are back off holiday, the team sheet will be sent later.
Alec
The ‘A’ team did eventually win against Mytchett, however it was looking very doubtful for three quarters of the match as Dennis’s team just could’t score and had only recorded 4 shots with 5 ends to go. A good tactical move of lengthen the jack to full length enabled them to score well on the last 5 ends giving Farnborough enough points to secure the overall results.

A&D – men snatch victory

A big well done to the ‘B’ team players tonight who came back from a losing position to beat Aldershot Underwood 3-2. Jacks rink won by 5, the other two lost by 1 and 3, but both were behind by a long way with 6 ends remaining but both dug deep to win 5 of the last 6 ends which meant we won by 1 shot overall. I think Underwood were shocked at losing what looked like a certain win for them.  Well done guys, a superb effort all round in very difficult conditions.
